hello to everyone in dix hills. my name is donald gross, my mothers name was esther gross. we helped start the library back in the olden days. in the late fifties, i
would go through my neighborhood in dix hills with my little red wagon collecting books and magazines to help stock the library. it was only in the basement of the school at that time. my library card number was #7. i spent many summer days on the old swing behind the school reading away the days. I believe their is a plaque with my mom’s name on it on the second floor. i would love to know if it still there. seeing your website is awesome knowing the humble beginnings. don gross

The name -Mrs. Harold Gross Trustee 1960-1963-
is listed on a large bronze plaque inside the old entranceway. If you would like to write more about your memories of the founding of the library for our Library History we would be most grateful.

donald – thanks for writing! i’m so glad that you and your mother were part of our library’s history! it was wonderful of you to share that memory, and to enable us all to envision how humble the beginnings of some truly extraordinary endeavors are! how fortunate are we all to have had the efforts of you and your mother enriching all of us, to this day – thank you (and so glad you have good memories of reading away the days of summer – i don’t know that there’s a better reward for hard, good work done!) – sandra jo
