We moved our new feature films out of the pull-out bins and onto separate shelves so you can browse through them with ease.
Kiddie Lit
June 20, 2007I wanted to take a quick moment to bring a book to my fellow children’s librarians’ attention. It is called Kiddie lit: the cultural construction of children’s literature in America by Beverly Lyon Clark. The book discusses the history of the way children’s literature has been perceived in our culture.
The title of the book is a reference to the condescending manner in which this genre is often referred. Ms. Clark outlines critics’ responses to books Tom Sawyer which one critic insisted would not receive respect until it “divorced itself” from status as a child’s book. The Wizard of Oz series by Baum didn’t receive the respect it should have either whereas the movie (which was targeted for adults) was considered a work of genius.
If one doesn’t have time to read the book in its entirety, skimming its contents is recommended. At the very least, consider the general theme that reading children’s literature is the first step a child makes on the path to becoming an avid adult reader!
So long, SuffolkWeb Dial-up
June 13, 2007On December 31, 2007 the Suffolk Cooperative Library System will be ending the SuffolkWeb dial-in Internet service. It was one of the first, if not THE first and only, public library systems to offer free dial-up Internet access to library patrons back in 1995. All you needed was a library card and you had free e-mail and web-surfing from home. This was pretty revolutionary and heady stuff back then, and once our patrons learned about it they jumped on board happily.
We’re still accepting new accounts, but dial-up has gone the way of the dinosaur and most Internet users in our area have moved on to broadband. It’s become too hard to keep the way out-of-date system going, so fondly but sadly we will say goodbye to SuffolkWeb Internet access.
