This is always such a fun time of year to be a media librarian. Once the Oscars are announced, the winning films are quickly available on DVD and ready to order. I know everyone will want to see them all, so I try to get them ordered and on the shelf asap. And when people check them out I feel kind of proud, like the movie mommy
And speaking of media
February 27, 2007Media at the Dix Hills building – the latest
February 22, 2007We are in the process of moving collections around to make the space more user friendly. DVDs and videos are now located in the first aisle closest to the windows. We have added more pull-out bins, there is more space for browsing and the light is better to make your selections. We hope you like it.
Of course, you know what happens when you move one section. It’s the domino effect; then we had to move a few more collections.
So we moved the multi-language collection, the tests collection and the student collection. They are now all in the same aisle (formerly occupied by DVDs and videos). Books on Tape haven’t moved too far, just around the corner and books on CD are now where the multi-language collection used to be.
By now you probably have no idea what went where. Come and take a look at the new arrangement. We hope it will make finding what you are interested in a little easier. Our goal is to make a visit to the library the best experience possible. And let us know what you think.

Go on a shelfari
February 11, 2007I just found this site – http://www.shelfari.com/ – Shelfari. It’s a place for virtual book groups, so if you like to read and discuss and can’t get to a group when it’s meeting, this might be the place for you. Explore the Groups to see what kind of crowd hangs out here. Remember when people used to meet in quaint places like used book stores? Now we network on the web.
MyLibraryTV is now MyLibraryDV
February 5, 2007Looks like it’s some old tv shows and even older movies. However, it’s got the potential to get really exciting. If we end up buying the service we could have newer movies, even movies on the day of their DVD release. Or we could upload our own content, which would be a lot of fun.
They’ve finally made good on the promise, and now it’s up to us to see if we like it. Please try it and leave a comment!
33 Reasons Why Libraries and Librarians are Still Extremely Important

We don’t really need people defending our honor, but it’s nice to read.
Do you ever visit other libraries when you are traveling or is that just something librarians do?
February 2, 2007I recently came back from a conference in Seattle. While I was there I visited the new Seattle Public Library building which opened about 2 1/2 years ago. This urban library is something to see with its unusualarchitecture and building layout. For information about the building, designed by Rem Koolhaas, go to http://www.arcspace.com/architects/koolhaas/Seattle/ . For a fabulous slide show on the library web site go to http://www.spl.org/images/slideshow/NewCentralSlideshow.asp. Notice the bright colors (the elevator is chartreuse and when you get off at the 4th floor it is totally red!) and the very large words to identify areas. Also note the areas that are named for local corporate donors (Microsoft, Starbucks). Large Dewey numbers are located on the floor to identify book stacks.
At the entrance to Library headquarters is a quote from Andrew Carnegie, the wealthy industrialist who endowed libraries throughout the United States about 100 years ago. “There is not such a cradle of democracy upon the earth as the Free Public Library, this republic of letters, where neither rank, office, nor wealth receives the slightest consideration.”
The evening I was there, there were people everywhere, adults, teens and children. I wasn’t sure it was a place I would like to work but the public seems to love it.
What stood out from my visit was the glass, steel and color. And I have to admit that the more I look at the pictures the more I like it. Take a look yourself and let me know what you think.
